The Bilingual International School of Paris (BISP) is situated in the heart of the French capital, in the 15th arrondissement, or borough, of the city. BISP is a private, independent school, not restricted to or associated with a religious denomination.
BISP Preschool, on the Rue des Entrepreneurs, welcomes students of all nationalities, regardless of whether they speak French, English or any other language.
As the name suggests, BISP delivers bilingual preschool, nursery and elementary school programs for children aged between 2½ and 11 years. BISP follows the best practices of the French and English National Curriculum frameworks but, right from the start, students learn and speak in French for one half of the school day and learn and speak in English for the other half.
Neither language is considered ‘dominant’ or ‘foreign’ and, because language is a means to an end, rather than an end in itself, knowledge is augmented over and over again. Class sizes are small and parents are actively encouraged to participate in school activities, thereby creating a warm, friendly environment in which students can flourish.
Of course, students learn basic concepts such as spelling, punctuation and grammar in French and English from native speakers, but the aim is to immerse them in both languages, from an early age, so that they naturally become bilingual. In so doing, they also develop superior reasoning skills and a stronger sense of individuality.
They also avoid the problems created by attempting to impose the syntax of French onto English and vice versa.
